Adult Continence Promotion Service

The Adult Continence Promotion Service is available to adults over the age of 19 who are registered with a St Helens GP and are having difficulties with bladder and/or bowel symptoms. We also offer support and advice to relatives and/or carers of people with bladder and/or bowel issues.

The service is based in Fingerpost Park Health Centre (first floor), Atlas Street, St Helens, WA9 1LN. Clinics are held on a Monday, Thursday and Friday.


How to access the service?

It is an open referral service; this means you can refer yourself to the team, or if consent is gained, you can refer a family member or friend. You can also be referred by your General Practitioner, Social Worker or another health care professional.

This includes all nursing, residential and supported living homes.

Bladder and Bowel UK

They provide information and advice for Adults, Children and Teenagers who have bladder and/or Bowel issues. Their website has resources you can read tailored to each age group.

 

Helpline

Receive advice on bladder and bowel health, continence promotion and options for managing incontinence, products, as well as signposting to services. The helpline staff offer general information, advice and signposting for bladder and bowel issues. For personal medical advice, they recommend that you speak to your GP.  'Just Can't Wait' Card

Bladder and Bowel UK offer the Just Can't Wait Card.  The card is recognised and supported by many retail and service organisations, giving you access to toilets not normally available to the general public.

It is a convenient credit-card sized card, which can be shown at cafes, restaurants, entertainment venues and other businesses. The card also features the Bladder & Bowel UK helpline number. Although access is not guaranteed, the cards are widely accepted and acknowledged.

Radar Key

The National Key Scheme (NKS) offers disabled people independent access to locked public toilets around the country. Toilets fitted with National Key Scheme (NKS) locks can now be found in shopping centres, pubs, cafés, department stores, bus and train stations and many other locations in most parts of the country.

The Key is currently £5 if you are eligible for VAT relief, £6 with VAT. Postage costs apply.

Paediatric Continence Service

The aim of the paediatric continence service is to achieve early identification, assessment and initial treatment of children and young people with continence problems in the Halton and St Helens area. The service also manages long-term continence problems in children and young people. This includes supporting children with complex medical conditions that impact on continence. The service accepts referrals for children ages 0-18 for the following problems:


  • Constipation - from birth
  • Day Wetting 3½ yrs
  • Night time wetting 5yrs
  • Complex bladder and bowel conditions – from Birth to 19yrs
  • Delayed toilet training – 3½ yrs (please note on referral evidence is required from universal services that primary toileting support has been implemented and failed)


Please note they do not accept parent referrals

There is a 'Referral for Paediatric Continence Assessment' form on their website for professionals to complete and return by post or secure email.
